There are bad weeks, and then there is what happened to KOVALA at Royal Birkdale. Ryan Fox — a $0 snake pick, currently rostered by KOVALA, physically listed on KOVALA's team — won the Open Championship at -10. KOVALA did not start him. KOVALA started Patrick Reed, who shot even par, and finished dead last in OFFGC at -5. Somewhere a DeLorean is up on blocks weeping.
JORGENSON, meanwhile, ran away with the week at -17 and pocketed $100. Cameron Young led the way at -9, with Åberg (-5) and Gotterup (-3) filling out a perfectly-optimized trio. WILSON was second at -15 behind Scheffler (-7) and Adam Scott (-5) — a two-stroke margin, but never really in doubt down the stretch. Nobody in the field started Ryan Fox. The Claret Jug went to a golfer sitting on a bench in this fantasy league. Beautiful game.
And about that bench. In the timeline where KOVALA gets a whisper from the golf gods on Wednesday to slot Ryan Fox and Ryan Gerard (-5) into the lineup, they post -18 and win the entire thing going away. Instead they wrote in Reed and Cantlay, watched Fitzpatrick miss the cut, and cratered by 13 strokes vs. their optimal. It is the biggest single-week leak of the segment. It happened to the team leading the segment. The universe has a sense of humor and it is not a kind one.
Around the Homa Cup ledger, this week was about season-long winners padding the lead. Cameron Young climbed from #4 to #3 in OWGR and gained JORGENSON $3.90 — he's now up $34.77 since draft day, the biggest diamond in the league. Sam Burns leapt from #18 to #11 and gained NIMSGER $4.02, the largest weekly swing of the field. Even Tommy Fleetwood — who's been oscillating around break-even all season — jumped three OWGR spots on a T2 and gained CP $2.60. Scheffler stayed #1 (as he does) and picked up another $1.71 for WILSON. The bill for Maverick McNealy's disappearance ($16 in the hole for VANILLA since January) remains unpaid.
The segment picture is where it gets spicy. KOVALA still leads Segment 3 at 128 points, but the gap to JORGENSON and CP (both 109) just shrunk to 19 with three events left and a $100 segment bonus on the table. A last-place finish in a level 3 major is not the ideal way to protect a lead. JORGENSON banks $100 this week and sits at +$100 for the segment; KOVALA drops to -$25 on the week but still leads segment cash at +$200. STAT SHEET and VANILLA remain the segment's cash pinatas at -$50 apiece.
Goose egg leaderboard: Hovland ($22, CP) got the axe Friday, Fitzpatrick ($21, KOVALA) joined him on the couch, and Bhatia, Spieth, and Rose rounded out the missed-cut buffet. Hovland's the priciest starter to draw a zero — a $22 world-top-20 anchor for CP who has now missed cuts in seemingly every links wind ever recorded. CP overcame it thanks to Fleetwood; KOVALA, obviously, did not.
One last note: VANILLA edged KOVALA on the tiebreaker at -5. That extra tiebreaker point — the difference between 7th and 8th — was the difference between $0 and losing $25. Ryan Fox on the bench cost KOVALA the week, the segment cushion, AND a $25 penalty. Anyway.
